Spirituality and Commercialism

The New Age movement has managed to hang on and even thrive in spite of mainstream attempts at squashing it. In some cases New Age stuff has even become rather mainstream itself. This is due in part to how marketable the trimmings of New Ageism are. Crystals, incense, fashion, whimsical tarot decks, self help books from self appointed gurus, and so on can all be easily sold in person or online. This drives the market to continue to offer more and more in this line.

While this makes certain items and certain practices more acceptable and accessible, there is a clear down side. Over commercialization is an effective method of killing the heart and soul of whatever spiritual movement you might have. I won’t name names, but one such New Age guru came to my attention recently. He has a snappy website where he sells services, education, and of course products. If it is marketable he has added it to his $pirituality.  Now, there is nothing wrong with making money. There is nothing wrong with making money from your practice...

New supplemental section.

We now have a section in the directory titled Supplemental. This is going to be a section for information and topics I feel are important to a more rounded magickal education. These are topics not covered by the Temple Circle of Light’s course material.

First inner court lesson available. 

Starting with Lesson 17 the inner court lessons will be written and uploaded as time allows. I have decided to include them open to the public as there really isn’t much you can do with most of the material unless you have worked through the outer court anyway. With the amount of misinformation and low quality information out there, I think both of these additions are needed. That said….on to the blog.

Truth, intuition, and logic. Combating misinformation.

It seems like there is misinformation everywhere today. Everytime you open your phone or turn on the TV. How do we discern fact from fiction?

By fact checking. Look to known reliable sources and compare this to other sources.

Realize “truth” is often spun to manipulate you one way or the other.

Over the past several years I’ve have little to no time to work on this project. Thankfully I will now have some time in the coming months. So I will resume working on the site.

Plans- We will start by introducing a few new areas. First will be an FAQ (frequently asked questions). Second will be a brief overview of the history of magick (and to some extent religion). This will be expanded based on time and interest. Third will be access to the outer court lessons.

I’ve received multiple emails asking similar questions over the years, and I think these new sections will address much of that.

Over the past few years I have had to drive considerable distances for school. Most of this consisted of an hour long drive home late at night, often 4 or 5 days a week. To remain alert while driving I turned to popular music. What I have found is that far too often one or more of these songs would get stuck in my head.

This was not typically a problem until they started bleeding over into my meditations and reducing my ability to focus. In order to regain my focus and clear my head, I have undergone a fast from music with lyrics. This initiated a sort of mental cleansing process.

The process started by more recent songs playing in my head. Eventually these faded and songs I have not really listened to in years began to play. I found it odd that songs that I haven’t listened to in a long time would surface like this. Apparently, I had accumulated a lot of clutter on these drives!

Within a few days, the intensity of the songs started to fade. They no longer invade my meditations, though they do pop up every now and again throughout my day. This...

With the recent equinix we have once again entered Autumn. For many, this is a time of change. As the trees drop their leaves so too can you harness the energy of this season by removing unused or unhealthy things from your life.

Start by going through your home and getting rid of any junk that is just lying around. If you can’t remember the last time you used it you probably don’t need it. If it is still usable, consider donating it to a charitable organization. They often need more stuff with the Holiday season fast approaching.

When you finish with this, contemplate your life by writing down the answers to just two questions on a piece of paper. What activities are you doing that are moving you towards your goals? What activities are you doing that are distracting you from them? Pick a few of the latter and shift the time you waste on them to the former.

One major change you can make is to start scheduling a regular planning period. Pick a time to unplug (no technology please!) and sit down with a pen and paper. Write down everything you need to get done. Then prioritize...

Greetings fellow seekers;

In 2009 I started back to school. After completing my associate degree I proceeded to work on my bachelor degree. The institution I chose has a reputation for academic difficulty. With the long hours that naturally go with a full (or over-full) class schedule and the other obligations my path required, I have had little time to work on my own development. Spending hours writing reports left little desire for writing metaphysical/spiritual lectures. As you may well know, these kinds of things require one to be in the correct mood. Exhaustion is not the correct mood!

Soon I will be starting on the next phase of my education. While this is an overwhelming undertaking, like drinking from a fire hose as the old saying goes, the scheduling is much more reasonable and sensible than the haphazard and uncoordinated schedules at my undergraduate institution.

This change will provide me with time to start working on my training again, which includes working on this site. The teachings of the Order will be something I will have to lean heavily on if I am to not only survive the coming 7 year ordeal, but to thrive in it. I will...

Ah, 2012, the End of the World is approaching, again. It is not your imagination; claims of the end of the world really do pop up periodically. Virtually every turn of the century has some sort of claim to the end of the world. Combine these with the randomly predicted end-of-the-worlds thrown up through the centuries and the world has ended so many times!!!

There is a deeper spiritual lesson to be gained here, and from the upcoming year of 2012.

In each and every moment the world is, figuratively, ending and beginning. When you keep this in mind the importance of each moment becomes apparent. You only have so many, and one of them will be your last in this life. In this way, the end of the world, your world, could be at any moment. A few months back, I started to study the works of Eckhart Tolle. His method of meditating while speaking to his audience moved me. His works take ancient and modern knowlege/wisdom and translates it into a format that virtually anyone can understand, if they will take the time to listen with an open heart. In his books and CDs he focuses on the Power of Now, the present moment. Being in the present moment is the backbone of his message. That is the true purpose of meditation. Many of the techniques of magick and metaphysics are utilised for that one singular goal. Only by being fully in the present, only by awakening in what you do can you gain the requiered, single minded focus that makes magick work.

People often wonder what is meant by the terms outer and inner courts of magick. In all complete metaphysical traditions there is found a public face and a secret face. The public face or outer court, sometimes referred to as the order in its outer (form), deals with new recruits, educating the general public, publishing materials and other such mundane concerns. The inner court members tend to be able to make decisions about the management of the order, deals with the secret teachings, and other such mysterious practices. In all honesty the main difference is that members of the outer court simply have less training and experience. In most systems the founders or there successors determine what teachings fall in the inner or outer courts. Often the inner court training and procedure require at least a working knowledge of the outer court teachings. Sometimes the student will simply not have the prerequisite information or skills to apply or even understand the teachings of the inner court. Occasionally the inner court techniques may actually be dangerous to the insufficiently trained.
