Why teach?

I teach for two reasons. The first is that it is very rewarding to see a student, a fellow seeker, succeed at the teachings. The second is that teaching brings me to a deeper understanding of these practices.

Why are these teachings free?

These teachings are being offered for free for several reasons. The biggest reason is that I truly believe that the material presented on this site is important for the advancement of the human race. These teachings can be found in many places, in various forms. Collecting them here makes finding them easier for those brought to this site.

I do not have to charge because I have selected a free web hosting site. The advertisements on the site pay for the site. The content brings traffic. Another reason is that these teachings have allowed me to remain in a financial situation that allows me to not need to have to charge for these teachings.

Sharing the teachings is a lot of work, but it is very rewarding. I did have to pay for the teachings when I received them from the Order. However, the materials offered were at a very reasonable price considering the volume of material I received. It would have taken years and thousands of dollars to collect all of the information from other sources. That is, those sources that were available.

Should I teach?

Teaching is something you should feel called to do. Once you have a certain understanding of the material, if you decide to teach you should do so for the right reasons. Start by evaluating your motivation for teaching. If you think you are going to get rich quick, forget it! You can make a meager living selling these teachings, but you have to work very hard to do so.

If you find you want to teach for the ego boost, think again! Putting yourself in the position of expert will only flatter your ego if you only accept foolish students. If you have any quality to your students, they will test your understanding of the material. If you have enough students, some of them will test your patience too.

I have been very fortunate in the quality and dedication of my students. They have asked me some challenging questions. Most of them have done well with the teachings. A few have gone on to start teaching themselves. But I have also had some disappointments and failures. Luckily, they have all been mild. By far, the worst I have experienced was when a friend wanted me to start a local study group for her and her friends. I agreed and we set up a time and location. They were all beginners, so I prepared an appropriate lesson plan. However, I was the only one who showed up for the meeting. Had this been my first experience, I might have given up on teaching.

This is mild compared to some of the other stories I have heard from other teachers of these things. Even following your intuition, sometimes it is easy to make mistakes. Why am I telling you this?  Really just to caution you. Not everyone will be as passionate about spiritual development as you or I. There will be bumps in the road. You will experience failure. And that’s OK. It is an important part of the process of teaching anything that matters!

I feel called to teach. When can I start?

There are different levels of “teaching”. For beginners, starting a study group with a few like minded seekers can allow you each to take turns presenting lessons or leading practice. You should have completed at least the outer court training before considering actually teaching. Placing yourself in the position of expert can be difficult. It requires a certain level of maturity as it can easily eat up a lot of time, as well as emotional and mental energy.

Be sure to stick to what you know. It is OK to say “I don’t know,” so long as you make an effort to find out. If you feel the need to make answers up rather than admitting you don’t know, then you are likely not mature enough to teach yet.

When you first start out, take it slow and easy. If you decide to teach in person, meet new people in a safe, well lit, public place. Even if you have mastered all we have to offer you will still be human. Making mistakes is part of being human, but your safety isn’t something you want to make mistakes with.

Some local Pagan, New Age, and occult supply stores offer classes on site. Check with them to see if you can offer a few lessons there. Otherwise, a bookstore or coffee shop is a good alternative for meeting potential students face to face for the first time.
