Persistence
Persistence
“Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence.
Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent.
Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.
Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.
Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent’ - Calvin Coolidge.
This quote occupies a full page near the front of my copy of The Golden Dawn, by Israel Regardie. It is there, as its own page, for good reason. It is one of the most important entries in the book. It is one of the most important lessons you can learn in life.
It is vital to success in the practice of magic. Without persistent regular practice you will never pick up the momentum needed to scale the mountain of knowledge and skill the seeker faces.
I have seen many people with natural talent fall flat on their faces. In areas of my own life where I had natural talent, when I came as far as my talent could take me I often met the difficulties of progress by quitting. In areas of my life where I lacked natural talent, when I hit obstacles or hardship I was already accustomed to the struggle. So I pushed on to new heights. I’ve carried this lesson through the important areas in my life. My family. My magical training. My calling. It has served me well.
Like talent, genius often leads to laziness. Laziness will not do when pursuing the mysteries sought by the seeker.
Education is a wonderful thing. Without education in a topic you will never come to understand it. However, without experience your education in the topic becomes worthless. This is especially true in the mystical arts. There is nothing wrong with being an armchair magician, regurgitating theories and discussing the proper shade of olive for your dream wand. But NOTHING takes the place of getting off the chair and actually doing the work.
The lessons can be difficult at times. I do hope you struggle from time to time with the training and the material. The lessons we win through struggle stick with us. They transform us into better versions of ourselves. Only through persistent study and training can you unlock your full potential.
